At one time or another, you will get a speck in your eye that needs to be removed. Most of the time, the eye's natural tears will flush the foreign object out of your eye. Although medical attention should be sought if you have something in your eye that can damage it, particles such as sand, makeup, an eyelash or dirt in your eye can be removed without the need for medical assistance. Follow these steps to remove a speck from your eye.
Steps
- 1Blink your eye frequently. Blinking will make your eye tear and water naturally. This is the least evasive way to remove a speck in your eye.

- 3Flush your eye with cool water or saline solution.
- Flush your eye with cool water over the sink. Carefully splash water into your open eye, or pour water from a cup, while you hold your head back and eye open.
- Use eye sensitive saline solution to flush your eye. While holding your eye open with one hand, tilt your head back and squeeze several drops of saline into your eye.
- Lift the upper lid and flush the area with cool water. Blinking when the speck is in your eye can cause the speck to lodge itself under the upper lid.
- 4Pull your upper eyelid over the top of the lower eyelid. As you close the upper lid over the bottom lid, roll your eye.
- 5Remove a speck in the sclera. The sclera is the white part of your eye. Use a wet cotton swab, a clean washcloth or a soft, damp towel to remove the speck. Hold your eyelid open with one hand while removing the foreign object with a cloth in the other hand.
- 6Seek medical attention if you are unable to remove the foreign object from your eye. Cover your eye with a soft towel until you seek professional eye care. Covering your eye will reduce the amount of light your eye is exposed to, making you more comfortable until medical attention is sought.
