how to remove rust from metal

When metal comes into contact with air, a process called oxidation occurs and rust forms on the metal's surface. The rusting process can be prevented by imbuing the metal with stainless properties, but sometimes that isn't possible or desired. When metal has rusted, throwing it away and buying a replacement is an option, but you can save some money if you instead learn how to remove rust from metal.

Steps

  1. 1
Use tools to scrape off rust. If you have any steel wool or wire brushes available, you can use them to scrub loose flakes of rust off the metal. This method is most useful for slightly rusted pieces. Heavily rusted pieces will require more drastic measures as scraping will only remove about 50% of the rust.

Use chemical rust removers. While there are plenty of rust removers available, many of them are toxic and dangerous. Most rust removers rely on phosphoric acid or oxalic acid, so it is highly advised that you wear heavy duty rubber gloves and a mask and follow the directions on the product very carefully.
  3. 3
Use white vinegar. White vinegar is a home remedy that doesn't carry the risks of industrial chemicals. Rubber gloves are not necessary and it won't produce any toxic fumes.
    • For smaller items, like jewelry or screws, all you have to do is fill a small container with the vinegar and let the items soak in it for a while. Once the rust has dissolved, rinse the item off with hot water and dry it.
    • For larger items, you can just pour the vinegar on directly. If that isn't practical, soak a rag or a piece of cloth with vinegar and use it to spread the vinegar on the rust. When the rust has dissolved, rinse it and wipe it down.
  4. 4
Use baking soda. Baking soda is a great alternative to vinegar for natural rust removal solutions. Mix the baking soda with a little water to create a paste. Apply the paste to the rusted object and let it sit. Once the rust has been dissolved, scrub it off. Multiple applications may be necessary. Once the rust is removed, rinse and wipe it down.

Tips

  • Combine a number of the steps together to get added power in your rust removal. For example, if you need to remove rust from a chain, let it soak in vinegar for a while and then scrub it down using steel wool or a wire brush.
  • To prevent rust from forming in the future, treat the object with a layer of wax or paint. However, make sure all of the rust has been removed first, otherwise it will continue to eat away at the metal underneath.
