Timing belt which is also called the cam belt is basically a chain that is used for interchange of rotary and linear motion when the vehicle needs to maintain a specific drive ratio or has to balance heavy-weight. When it comes to replacing the timing belt, most car owners prefer it to be done with the help of a skilled mechanic as it is not any easy task. However, if you are apt with the car repairing, you can change a speed belt by following a certain procedure. Here are few steps for which will certainly help you knowing the process of timing belt change procedure.
1)First of all remove the connection of battery along with removing the cap of distributor. Keep the position sensor of the Top Dead Center (TDC) as referred in the repair manual.
2)Make sure that the rotor should be exactly in line with the distributor housing’s index mark. Now rotate the engine in such a way that the timing mark provided on the camshaft pulley can be kept in line with the ‘zero’ mark.
3)Now its time to unlock the bolts and screws and other parts which are needed to be removed in order reach the time belt and change it. You can take help of the repair manual for the same.
4)Keep in mind that you don’t have to remove the timing belt tensioner and the mounting bolts, instead, just loosen them up. Tighten the mounting bolts after moving away the tensioner, so that it can be kept on its place.
5)Now the belt tensioner can be easily slide-off. After sliding-of the tensioner remove the timing belt.
6)Just reverse the process after replacing the old timing belt with new one. Keep a close eye on the position of pulley as it should be right on zero mark during the changing process.
7)Take help of the repair manual for information on how hard to torque the tensioner and other bolts.
